Cook Street Community Midwives

Devi Garner

Hello, my name is Devi. I come from a family of European ancestry and was born in Aotearoa (New Zealand), on the traditional territory of the Te Atiawa Māori. I have lived in four countries, but for most of the last 20+ years I have been grateful to live as an immigrant and settler on southern Vancouver Island, the traditional unceded territories of the Lekwungen-speaking Coast Salish peoples.

I grew up listening to my auntie’s stories about her work as a midwife, and my early heroes were the excellent midwives who welcomed my five younger siblings. At five years old I attended my first birth, and it made a big impression. My own children were born at home into the skilled hands of midwives. As they grew, the call to birth work became impossible to ignore and I completed my training as a Registered Midwife at the University of British Columbia – Faculty of Medicine.

I deeply enjoy the diversity of new families I support, and have particular interests in perinatal mental health, community building, and working with families affected by migration. My practice is devoted to informed choice with evidence-based care integrated with a holistic and preventative health care approach. I believe acceptance, connection, and safety build confidence and empowerment. I am continually inspired by witnessing my clients embrace and discover their own strength and wisdom. I work collaboratively with your healthcare team to offer relational, inclusive care.

When I am not catching babies, you’ll find me belly laughing with friends, trying to keep up with my adult children, and walking my clever dog and determined cat with my partner. I frequently muddle my way through yoga and meditation practices, and occasionally dabble in gardening. I can often be found in wild places; breathing in forests and paddling in the ocean.

I work collaboratively to offer relational, inclusive care while facilitating connection and empowerment as you expand your family. I can’t imagine a greater privilege than accompanying you through the transformative experience of growing and welcoming a tiny human.
